Paris, the City of Light, is renowned for its timeless charm, rich history, and hidden mysteries waiting to be uncovered. Among its many landmarks, the equestrian statue of Henri IV on the Pont-Neuf stands as a silent witness to centuries of tumultuous events and whispered legends.

The Rise and Fall of the Henri IV Statue: In 1614, amidst great fanfare and celebration, a majestic bronze statue of King Henri IV was erected on the Pont-Neuf—the oldest standing bridge in Paris. Symbolizing the strength and resilience of the French monarchy, the statue became an enduring emblem of royal authority.  Like many symbols of its time, the Henri IV statue faced adversity during the upheaval of the French Revolution. In the fervor of revolutionary fervor, it met a fate shared by countless other relics of the old regime—it was torn down and melted, a casualty of the shifting tides of history.

Even it fell victim to the tumult of the Revolution and was destroyed, was recreated in 1818 upon the Restoration.

A Resurrection and Rumors of Intrigue: It was not until 1818, in the wake of the Restoration, that efforts were made to revive the Henri IV statue. Commissioned by Louis XVIII, a new sculpture was crafted to replace the original, breathing new life into an enduring symbol of French monarchy.

Yet, beneath the surface of this seemingly straightforward narrative lurked whispers of intrigue and conspiracy. Rumors began to circulate regarding the statue's creator, a certain Mesnel, whose alleged Bonapartist sympathies cast a shadow of suspicion over the project.

Urban legends spun tales of hidden texts clandestinely embedded within the sculpture—critiques of the Bourbon monarchy, secret missives penned by luminaries such as Voltaire and Sully, and even a miniature statue of Napoleon I concealed within its bronze form. For over two centuries, these rumors persisted, shrouding the Henri IV statue in an aura of mystery and intrigue.

Unearthing Hidden Treasures: In 2004, during routine renovations on the Pont-Neuf, workers made a startling discovery. Tucked away within the recesses of the Henri IV statue lay a trove of hidden treasures, long forgotten by time.

Among the discoveries were relics from the statue's transport and installation, writings by luminaries such as Voltaire and Sully, and around ten medals depicting scenes from the royal family's life. Intriguingly, lead boxes bearing Mesnel's name were also found, though the contents remained unreadable.

These artifacts now reside in the National Archives, preserving a tantalizing glimpse into Paris's enigmatic past.
