By the 19th century, the Arènes de Lutèce was buried under rubble and largely forgotten. In the 1860s, during the construction of the Rue Monge, workers stumbled upon its remains. It was scheduled for demolition to make way for a tramway depot, but a passionate campaign led by writers like Victor Hugo helped save it.

Without this intervention, the amphitheater would have vanished into history.
